Punjab Govt heads to make Bathinda jail 'communication dead'

Chandigarh, November 17: With the Punjab and Haryana High Court coming down heavily on the Punjab Government for not taking security of jails seriously, the latter has decided to make Bathinda jail ‘a communication dead zone’.

According to information, talks are underway with the Central Government on installing 4G jammers in Punjab jails. It is expected that Punjab’s Bathinda jail will be the first to receive such jammer as it houses state’s most hardcore criminals.

In an RTI filed by Manik Goyal from Mansa  recently, some facts have come to the fore that point towards weakened security of Punjab jails. The incidents of recovery of cellphones from barracks have become a routine affair. On the other hand, Punjab Cabinet minister Harjot Bains has been claiming to make Punjab jails cellphone-free. The RTI has revealed that the Punjab Jail Department has not purchased a single cellphone jammer in the last six years.

Manik Goyal said previous governments did not take the use of cellphones in jails seriously. 4G was rolled out across India in late 2016 and the Jails Department of the Punjab government has not purchased jammers since early 2016. This clearly indicates that the jammers installed in 27 jails in Punjab are not capable of blocking the 4G signal.
