Punjab weather update: IMD issues heatwave alert for Punjab till June 11; temperatures may cross 45°C in several districts
Punjab Weather update: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a three-day heatwave alert for Punjab, warning of unusually high temperatures both during the day and night. The department predicts that temperatures across the state will remain significantly above normal until June 11, with some relief expected starting June 12.
According to IMD data, the average maximum temperature in the state has risen by 2.5°C, which is 3.5°C above normal. The minimum temperatures have also seen an increase of 1.2°C, now 3°C higher than the seasonal average.
Bathinda records highest temperature at 44.8°C
Among the districts, Bathinda has recorded the highest maximum temperature at 44.8°C. In several other districts, temperatures have already crossed the 40°C mark, and officials warn that temperatures may exceed 45°C in parts of the state today.
Orange alert in 13 districts, yellow alert in others
On June 9, the IMD has placed 13 districts under Orange Alert, signaling severe heatwave conditions. These districts are:
Amritsar, Tarn Taran, Kapurthala, Jalandhar, Hoshiarpur, Rupnagar, Mohali, Patiala, Sangrur, Barnala, Bathinda, Faridkot and Muktsar.
Meanwhile, yellow alert (moderate warning) has been issued for Ludhiana, Ferozepur, Fazilka, Mansa, Bathinda, and Moga. The orange alert is expected to remain in effect across most districts on June 10, with partial improvement anticipated from June 11 onwards. By June 12, conditions are expected to normalise across the state.
Temperature highlights in key districts: Amritsar: 44.0°C, Ludhiana: 43.4°, Patiala: 42.8°C, Pathankot: 43.0°C, Bathinda: 44.8°C, Faridkot: 43.0°Cl, Ferozepur: 42.3°C, Hoshiarpur: 40.9°C and Gurdaspur: 39.0°C
The IMD has urged residents to avoid unnecessary exposure to sunlight, especially during peak hours, and to stay hydrated. Vulnerable groups, including the elderly, children, and those with chronic illnesses, are advised to take extra precautions.
