Chandigarh, January 4: The Punjab Police on Wednesday arrested a 20-years-old AC mechanic for allegedly making extortion calls to a Mohali-based pharmaceutical company owner by posing as Canada-based gangster Goldy Brar.

Punjab DGP Gaurav Yadav said the accused had been identified as Suraj (20), a resident of Maloya colony in Chandigarh. He was arrested from Verka Chowk here, when he along with his accomplice Mandeep Singh (32) of village Mangewal in Sri Anandpur Sahib, was going to collect extortion money on a motorcycle.


The Punjab Police have also recovered two cellphones and a motorcycle without registration number plate from their possession.

The complainant, who is an owner of a pharmaceutical company located in Industrial Area in SAS Nagar, had alleged that he had received a call from a man claiming to be gangster Goldy Brar on December 30. The caller demanded Rs 30 lakh as extortion money and threatened to kill him in case the complainant failed to give the protection money on time.



Punjab DGP Gaurav Yadav said following the complaint, the State Special Operation Cell of SAS Nagar immediately started investigations and arrested caller Suraj, who was using the WhatsApp number of his accomplice Mandeep Singh, to make extortion calls to the target.

Suraj works as an AC mechanic while Mandeep is a taxi driver.

AIG, SSOC, SAS Nagar, Ashwani Kapur said preliminary investigations had revealed that accused Suraj used to target affluent people to make extortion calls. “We have sent both cellphones for forensic examination to find out if the accused made extortion calls to any other person,” he said.

Meanwhile, an FIR under Sections 384 and 120B of the IPC has been registered.
