Ranjit Singh murder case: Gurmeet Ram Rahim moves HC against life term, petition approved for hearing
The Punjab and Haryana High Court on Monday admitted the appeal filed by Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim in the 2002 Ranjit Singh Murder case. It also stayed the fine imposed him by the CBI Court.

Gurmeet Ram Rahim had been fined Rs 31 lakh, half of which was to go to Ranjit Singh’s son. The Punjab and Haryana High Court has stayed the fine and admitted the plea.

On October 8, Gurmeet Ram Rahim and his co-accused — Avtar Singh (53), Sabdil Singh (49), Krishan Lal (72), and Jasbir Singh (53) — were convicted in the Ranjit Singh murder case. They were found guilty under Section 302 (murder), 120B (criminal conspiracy) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the IPC and Section 27 of the Arms Act (punishment for using arms).

Ranjit Singh, a follower of Gurmeet Ram Rahim and manager of the Dera Sacha Sauda in Haryana’s Sirsa, was shot dead on July 10, 2002. As per CBI’s chargesheet, Gurmeet Ram Rahim suspected Ranjit Singh of circulating an anonymous letter accusing him of sexually exploiting women followers.

The CBI had registered the case on the orders passed by the Punjab and Haryana High Court in November 2003. A chargesheet against six accused was filed on July 30, 2007, and charges were framed on December 12, 2008. One of the accused died in October 2020.
