SAD demands two super-specialty cancer hospitals in Amritsar, Jalandhar

Chandigarh, August 23 – The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) today called for establishment of two super-specialty cancer hospitals in Amritsar and Jalandhar under the aegis of the Homi Bhabha Cancer Hospital and Research Centre, Mohali being inaugurated by the Prime Minister tomorrow, even as it congratulated Punjabis on the successful completion of former chief minister Parkash Singh Badal’s dream project. He said it was also a red letter day for Punjab that the war on cancer initiated by chief minister Parkash Singh Badal had resulted in the successful completion of the Homi Bhabha Cancer Hospital and Research Centre. “Parkash Singh Badal personally visited the Tata Memorial Centre (TMC) and requested its Board to establish the Homi Bhabha hospital in Mohali and it became the first such Institute to be approved by the TMC Board outside Mumbai. We are also proud that the erstwhile SAD led government allotted fifty acres of land for the Institute in Mohali”. Speaking about the need to expand on this initiative, Bikram Majithia said since a 100 bedded sub-centre of the Mohali Research Centre had been established in Sangrur, also during the tenure of Parkash Singh Badal and an AIIMS institute along with an Advanced Cancer Research Hospital had been established at Bathinda, there was a need to create such super-specialty projects in other parts of the State. “Accordingly two 100 bedded super-specialty cancer hospitals each should be established at Amritsar to cater to the Majha region and at Jalandhar for the Doaba region”. Majithia said the two new cancer hospitals besides providing much needed cancer treatment in the border belt as well as in the Doaba region, would also allow people of nearby areas in Himachal Pradesh to access these facilities. “Both facilities should be run by the Tata Memorial Centre (TMC) only under the aegis of the Homi Bhabha Institute and should provide facilities at par with those available at TMC in Mumbai”. The former minister also called for expansion of the Medicity project in Mohali which was the brainchild of former deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal. “The idea behind establishing the Medicity was to create world class medical infrastructure in Mohali. The AAP government should expand on this project to make Mohali a medical hub of both national and international standards''. Majithia also called for additional investment in the health sector on the pattern of the Rs 10,000 crore investment done by the erstwhile SAD led government. He said currently the health sector was in shambles as the AAP government was not investing in infrastructure but indulging in propaganda exercises by renaming Sewa Kendras as Mohalla Clinics.  “What Punjab needs is investment in super-specialty hospitals including provision of 100 bedded ultra-modern hospitals in each district of the State. The AAP government should work to make this a reality instead of focusing on advertisements and false claims”, Majithia added.
