Sadhus suspected of child lifting rescued police from lynching

Police cops and army rescued three sadhus (Saints) from getting lynched by 100-strong mob in Assam. The mob suspected these sadhus to be child-lifters at Madhur Railway station, Dima Hasao district of Assam. Hundreds of people gathered to attack the sadhus at the railway station after being suspected of child-lifting. The mob started throwing their belongings too. Officials said that mob videographed it and shared the same on social media to further fuel the rumour. Army men posted at an adjoining camp along with police officers reached the spot and rescued them on Thursday. After this incident, the district administration, under the chairmanship of deputy commissioner Amitabh Rajkhowa and superintendent of police Prasanta Saikia called an emergency meeting. Representatives of various communities attended the meeting and requested people, especially to Dima Hasao locals not to be carried away by rumours on social media. Further, they also requested the public to report any suspicious activity of any place or person, to the authorities directly. Officials said that district administration has made several attempts to make the public aware about the baseless news being circulated on social media platforms. A similar incident happened on June 8 when a group of villagers stopped two friends, who had gone on a picnic spot in Karbi Anglong and lynched them after rumours or Child-lifting.
