New Delhi, September 2: The Supreme Court on Friday granted interim bail to activist Teesta Setalvad in a case in which she was arrested for allegedly fabricating documents to frame innocent people in the 2002 Gujarat riots cases.
The Supreme Court directed Teesta Setalvad to surrender her passport till the matter is considered by the High Court. A Bench of Chief Justice UU Lalit, Justice S Ravindra Bhat and Justice Sudhanshu Dhulia said in its view Setalvad was entitled to release on interim bail. The Bench also said Setalvad should be produced before the court concerned for interim bail and the court concerned should release her in bail subject to such conditions that the court concerned deem fit.

Who is Teesta Setalvad?
Padma Shri Teesta Setalvad is the granddaughter of MC Setalvad, India’s first Attorney General. Her great grandfather Chimanlal Harilal Setalvad was one of the three Indian members in the Hunter Commission that investigated the Jallianwalla Bagh massacre.

Teesta Setalvad is a founding trustee and secretary of the NGO Citizens for Justice and Peace (CJP) established in 2002 in the aftermath of the Gujarat riots. The NGO sought to provide legal assistance to victims of the 2002 Gujarat riots.

As per information, she was among the first activists to take up the cases of Gujarat riot victims. Following this, the Supreme Court set up an SIT under former CBI Director R K Raghavan to investigate the cases.
