PTC News Desk: WhatsApp has taken action against over 7.4 million ‘bad’ accounts in India, complying with the new IT Rules of 2021.

Between August 1 and 3, the Meta-owned messaging platform blocked at least 7,420,748 accounts in the country, according to the report. Before any user reports, about 3,506,905 of these accounts were proactively banned.

In August, the Meta-owned app got a record 14,767 complaint reports in India, according to its monthly compliance report, with 71 "actioned" records.

"Accounts Actioned" reports indicate that WhatsApp took corrective action based on the report, with action indicating either the banning of an account or the restoration of a previously banned account.

“This user-safety report contains details of the user complaints received and the corresponding action taken by WhatsApp, as well as WhatsApp’s own preventive actions to combat abuse on our platform."

Furthermore, in August, the company received and followed only one order from the Grievance Appellate Committee across the country. The Grievance Appellate Committee (GAC) was recently created by the Centre to examine user concerns regarding content and related issues. This panel attempts to strengthen digital regulations and handle user complaints against choices made by social media platforms.
