Jay Shah expected to become ICC chairman, succeeding Greg Barclay: Sources
PTC News Desk: Jay Shah, the Secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), is set to succeed Greg Barclay as the Chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC), according to sources.
Barclay has informed ICC directors, including Cricket Australia's Chair Mike Baird, during a video conference that he will not seek re-election for a third term. His decision follows news of Shah's intention to replace him in November. Shah, who has the support of cricket boards in England and Australia, is well-positioned to take over the role as the next ICC chairman.
An ICC spokesperson confirmed to The Age that Barclay will step down at the end of November, when his current term concludes. Barclay, who has served as ICC Chair since November 2020 and was re-elected in 2022, will not stand for re-election.
Current ICC regulations require directors to submit nominations for the next chair by August 27, 2024. If multiple candidates are proposed, an election will be held, with the new chair's term starting on December 1, 2024. The election process now requires a simple majority of 51% of the 16 voting members, as opposed to the previous two-thirds majority required.
Shah, who is widely favored among the ICC’s voting members, is expected to secure the position. At 35, if elected, he will become the youngest chairman in ICC history. Shah still has a year remaining in his role as BCCI Secretary before entering a mandatory cooling-off period in October 2025. According to the BCCI's constitution, an office bearer can serve for a maximum of six years before a three-year cooling-off period is required, allowing for a cumulative tenure of up to 18 years across state and national roles.
If Shah assumes the ICC chairmanship with a year left in his BCCI tenure, he will have four years remaining in his BCCI role before his cooling-off period begins.
