Mirabai Chanu wins silver at World Weightlifting Championships in 48kg category
PTC Web Desk: India’s star weightlifter Mirabai Chanu has added another feather to her illustrious career by winning the silver medal in the women’s 48kg category at the World Weightlifting Championships. With this podium finish, Chanu has now secured medals at the World Championships on three occasions, having earlier won gold in 2017 and silver in 2022.
Competing after moving down from the 49kg division, the Olympic medallist recorded a total lift of 199kg — 84kg in snatch and 115kg in clean and jerk. Despite a shaky start in the snatch, where she failed in her two attempts at 87kg, Chanu regained her rhythm in the clean and jerk, completing all three lifts (109kg, 112kg, and 115kg) with ease.
The 115kg lift also marked her first successful attempt at that weight since the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, where she won a historic silver medal.
Chief coach Vijay Sharma had earlier set the target of breaching the 200kg mark at this championship and preparing Chanu to regain the strength levels she showcased in the 49kg category.
The gold medal went to Ri Song Gum of North Korea, who produced a dominant 213kg total (91kg 122kg). Ri also set new world records in total and clean and jerk with her final two attempts of 120kg and 122kg. Thanyathon Sukcharoen of Thailand claimed the bronze medal with a total lift of 198kg (88kg 110kg).
