Rishabh Pant scripts history; becomes first wicketkeeper to smash twin tons in overseas match, breaks Sangakkara’s record
PTC Web Desk: In a breathtaking display of skill and temperament, Rishabh Pant has carved out a new chapter in cricket history. During the opening Test between India and England in Leeds, the dynamic wicketkeeper-batter delivered back-to-back centuries, becoming the first wicketkeeper in Test history to achieve this feat in an overseas match.
Pant began his innings with an electrifying 134 in the first innings, setting the tone for India’s strong batting performance. But he wasn’t done yet. On Day 4, with unwavering focus and aggressive flair, he hammered another brilliant century — 118 runs — before falling to a catch.
This remarkable achievement makes Rishabh Pant the only wicketkeeper in the world to score centuries in both innings of a Test away from home. While Zimbabwe’s Andy Flower had earlier scored twin hundreds in a home Test in Harare, no one had ever managed it on foreign soil — until now.
Pant leaves Sangakkara behind
Pant's combined total of 252 runs (134 & 118) in the match shattered a long-standing Asian record held by Kumar Sangakkara. The Sri Lankan legend had amassed 244 runs (230 & 14) in a Test against Pakistan, but Pant has now surpassed that with style and substance.
Among Indian greats
With this heroic double, Rishabh Pant has joined an elite group of Indian cricketers who have scored centuries in both innings of a Test match. This includes icons like Sunil Gavaskar (3 times), Rahul Dravid (2 times), Virat Kohli, Vijay Hazare, Ajinkya Rahane, and Rohit Sharma.
