The Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) on Wednesday named former Indian bowler Sunil Joshi as the new chairman of the Indian selectors replacing MSK Prasad. Meanwhile, Former Indian cricketer Harvinder Singh’s name was also recommended for the selection panel. CAC comprised of Madan Lal, RP Singh and Sulakshana Naik shortlisted 5 candidates to replace the outgoing selection panel chief MSK Prasad and the fellow member Gagan Khoda. The board has received around 44 applications for the two positions. Former Indian pacer Ajit Agarkar had also applied for the position. Agarkar was one of the high-profile names in the race. Also, he was one of the front-runners to seal the position. publive-image A BCCI official revealed that Agarkar's name was considered but in the end, the board shortlisted Siva, Prasad, Chauhan, Joshi, and Harvinder. The official also added that Agarkar's name can be considered after the tenure of the other three selectors (Jatin Paranjpe, Sarandeep Singh and Dewan Gandhi) will end.

Who all were in the race?

Rajesh Chauhan, Laxman Sivaramakrishnan, Nayan Mongia, and Venkatesh Prasad, were some of the high-profile names who were in the race for the two positions. Ajit Agarkar, who represented the nation in 191 ODIs and 26 Tests, was in the race but he was ignored by the board. What will be the first task?

In his new role, Sunil Joshi will be appointing the Indian squad for the upcoming series against South Africa. After suffering a whitewash in a two-match Test series against New Zealand, the Indian cricket team will be facing South Africa in a three-match ODI series. While the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 will be starting on March 29, the senior cricketers will likely to be rested for the series against the Proteas. Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma - who is recovering from an injury – are likely to miss the series.-
