Massive breach in Kandi canal after heavy rainfall in Punjab: No loss of life or property damage reported

Hoshiarpur, July 05: Following heavy rainfall on Wednesday, a significant breach measuring 40 feet wide occurred in the Kandi canal at Chakrota village in Garhshankar, according to officials. Fortunately, there have been no reported casualties or damage to property, and the situation is currently under control.

Hoshiarpur Deputy Commissioner, Komal Mittal, confirmed that the breach diverted canal water through a nearby cremation ground and some farmland. Immediate action was initiated by Mittal, urging concerned officials to address the breach urgently.

Vijay Kumar, the Superintending Engineer of the Kandi canal circle, explained that the breach took place in the high-filling section of the canal, situated in the sub-mountainous region near Chakrota, as a result of the heavy rainfall in Garhshankar. The breach occurred approximately 50 feet below the ground level where the canal is located.

In addition to the canal breach, the rainfall caused water from a nearby rivulet near Fatehpur Kothi village to flood the area, resulting in the collapse of a boundary wall of a house, as reported by Garhshankar Tehsildar Tapan Bhanot. Moreover, a seasonal rivulet near Jaijon village overflowed into nearby agricultural fields.

Sartaj Singh Randhawa, the executive engineer of Hoshiarpur drainage division, stated that numerous seasonal rivulets were flooded due to the heavy rain. The rising water level in the local Bhangi rivulet prompted authorities to issue announcements, advising residents in low-lying areas to relocate to safer places as a precautionary measure.

As of now, the authorities are actively working on repairing the breach in the Kandi canal, ensuring that the situation is promptly addressed and the risk of further damage is minimised.
