Subway faces social media backlash over sistasteful ad mocking Titan submarine tragedy

PTC News Desk: Subway, the US-based global sandwich chain, has come under fire for a controversial advertisement centered around the OceanGate's Titan submarine tragedy, where all five occupants were presumed lost due to an implosion.

The ad, displaying the message "Our subs don't implode," was showcased on an outdoor sign at a Subway restaurant in Georgia, USA. The move has garnered widespread criticism on social media, with many users deeming it as highly inappropriate. One Twitter user shared an image of the sign and commented, "Subway, this is at your store in Rincon, GA. Not only is it distasteful, it's just sad. Do better."

Several users expressed their outrage, with one stating, "I'll never eat at Subway ever. It is distasteful and disrespectful to families who lost loved ones." Another user called the ad an "absolute disgrace" and urged Subway to take responsibility and issue a corporate apology.

People also demanded accountability from Subway, urging them to terminate the individual responsible for the sign and demonstrate more sensitivity in their marketing strategies.

The tragic incident involved the deaths of five passengers: Hamish Harding, a billionaire and explorer; Paul-Henry Nargeolet, a French explorer; Shahzada Dawood and his son, Suleman Dawood, members of a prominent Pakistani family; and Stockton Rush, the CEO of OceanGate Expeditions and pilot of the Titan submarine.

Reportedly, the submersible went missing over 600 km off the coast of Newfoundland in eastern Canada during a dive to the wreck of the Titanic in the North Atlantic. The controversial Subway ad has sparked further discussions about the appropriateness of referencing such tragedies in advertising campaigns.
