On Bhai Dooj, sisters rise early, bathe, wear new clothes, and observe a fast for their brothers’ long life and well-being. During the auspicious muhurat, they apply tilak on their brothers’ foreheads, perform aarti, and offer sweets and food. In return, brothers give gifts, money, or clothes as a token of love and gratitude.

Bhai Dooj vrat katha

The festival is rooted in the ancient tale of Yama, the God of Death, and his sister Yamuna. According to legend, Yama visited Yamuna on this day, and she welcomed him with love, performed aarti, and applied a tilak on his forehead. In return, Yama granted her a boon that any brother who receives a tilak and aarti from his sister on this day will be blessed with prosperity, longevity, and freedom from untimely death.

It is also believed that bathing in the Yamuna River on Bhai Dooj helps devotees wash away sins and attain spiritual purification.
