ITR filing update: Last-minute Income Tax Return filers face technical glitches as deadline ending
ITR Filing Deadline: As the deadline for filing income tax returns (ITR) is ending this midnight, July 31, many last-minute filers encountered technical issues with the income tax portal. These glitches caused significant frustration among users trying to submit their returns on time. Numerous taxpayers expressed their concerns to Infosys, the company behind the portal's development.
Notably, on the last day of ITR filing, the portal remains inaccessible due to persistent loading issues. The Income Tax Department also warned taxpayers against making false expense claims, under-reporting income, or inflating deductions, as such actions are punishable and can delay the issuance of refunds.

According to the Income Tax Department and the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), over five crore ITRs had been filed as of July 26. For the fiscal year 2022-23, a total of 8.61 crore ITRs were submitted.
India offers two personal income tax regimes. The old regime has higher tax rates, but allows for multiple exemptions and deductions, while the new regime has lower tax rates with fewer deductions.
