Rare sight in Bihar’s Jaynagar: Mount Everest visible from over 200 km away after rain cleared skies

PTC Web Desk: A mesmerising natural spectacle has captured public attention in Jaynagar, a border town in Bihar’s Madhubani district, where the snow-capped peak of Mount Everest was recently visible on the horizon. The rare sight emerged after a spell of rainfall cleared the skies, reducing pollution and revealing a breathtaking view of the world’s tallest mountain, something last witnessed during the Covid-19 lockdown.

Situated along the banks of the Kamla River near the India-Nepal border, Jaynagar enjoys close proximity to the Himalayan range. Though Mount Everest lies more than 200 km away, the absence of fog, smog, and cloud cover allowed the majestic peak to be seen clearly with the naked eye. Locals say such clear visibility usually occurs during specific times of the year, particularly in the crisp months of Chaitra-Baisakh and Ashwin-Kartik, between Vasant Panchami and Holi, and again from Durga Puja to Kartik Purnima, when air quality is at its best.

Jaynagar also carries strategic and cultural significance as the originating point of Nepal’s only railway line that connects to the historic city of Janakpur. This cross-border route strengthens the cultural ties between the two regions, with many passengers from Nepal frequently visiting Jaynagar.
