Student pours petrol, sets teacher ablaze over one-sided love in Madhya Pradesh

PTC News Desk: In a shocking incident in Madhya Pradesh, an 18-year-old student allegedly set a 26-year-old guest teacher from his former school on fire on Monday. The accused, identified as Suryansh Kochar, a former student of Excellence School (Utkrisht Vidyalaya) in Narsinghpur’s Kotwali police station area, is said to have attacked the teacher over a personal grudge linked to a past complaint she had lodged against him.

Police said the incident occurred around 3:30 pm when Suryansh went to the teacher’s home carrying a petrol-filled bottle. He reportedly poured the fuel on her and set her ablaze before escaping.

The teacher sustained 10–15% burn injuries and was rushed to the district hospital, where doctors confirmed that while her injuries are serious, they are not life-threatening.

Investigations revealed that the accused had known the teacher for over two years and had developed a one-sided attachment toward her. He had earlier been expelled from her school and was studying elsewhere. According to Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDOP) Manoj Gupta, the teacher’s decision to report an objectionable remark made by Suryansh during Independence Day celebrations may have provoked the attack.

"This is a case of one-sided affection and personal vendetta," SDOP Manoj Gupta said.

"The teacher wore a saree for the school's August 15th program, which the accused commented on inappropriately. She lodged a complaint, which angered him. He then planned and executed this attack. A case under Section 124A and other relevant IPC sections has been registered. Further action will follow after recording the victim's full statement."
