American-born Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost has been elected next pope, taking name Pope Leo XIV. A total of 133 red-robed cardinals from across the globe cast their votes to choose the new pontiff.
Throughout the conclave, the cardinals remained sequestered, cut off from the outside world, as they deliberated on the future leader of the world’s 1.4 billion Catholics.
