Imran Khan’s sister finally meets him in Adiala jail amid rumours of his death, claims 'he is being mentally tortured'
PTC Web Desk: One of Imran Khan’s sisters was finally allowed to meet the incarcerated former Pakistani Prime Minister at Adiala Jail on Tuesday, following days of escalating protests and speculation surrounding his wellbeing. Uzma Khan was escorted into the high-security facility as Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) workers threatened to launch mass demonstrations across Rawalpindi despite restrictions, Geo News reported.
After the meeting, Uzma told reporters that Imran was being held in isolation and subjected to mental torture, but dismissed rampant rumours that he had died in custody. “Imran Khan is fine and in good health. He is in solitary confinement and facing mental torture,” she said. Her remarks contradicted earlier claims that jail authorities had imposed a strict gag order for the visit. “We don’t accept conditions,” she added while entering the prison.
Rumours about Imran’s alleged death had gained traction in recent weeks as his family repeatedly complained that they were denied access to him despite multiple court orders. The PTI founder has been in prison for more than two years, entangled in a series of corruption and terrorism cases.
On Tuesday morning, PTI supporters called for large-scale protests in Islamabad and Rawalpindi to demand immediate restoration of visitation rights. The Shehbaz Sharif government responded by banning public gatherings and heavily fortifying Rawalpindi. Later in the day, authorities granted permission for one family member to meet the former premier, prompting Uzma to express relief over the long-delayed approval.
Imran’s family has alleged that he was being kept in a “death cell” and that the authorities were concealing critical information about his condition. Over the past week, tensions outside Adiala Jail have risen sharply, with the area placed on high alert and five additional checkpoints established. More than 700 security personnel equipped with anti-riot gear have been deployed as PTI workers and Imran’s sisters continue their sit-ins.
Tempers flared last week when Imran’s sisters accused the police of dragging and manhandling them outside the jail, with some allegedly detained briefly.
Both the government and the jail administration have rejected reports of any deterioration in Imran’s health or claims of a secret transfer. “He is fully healthy and receiving complete medical care,” the Adiala Jail administration said in a statement.
