India-Canada row: Canada issues cautionary travel advisory for Indian cities amid diplomatic tensions

Canada India Diplomatic Row: Canada has issued an updated travel advisory for its citizens in India, urging them to "exercise a high degree of caution" in the wake of recent diplomatic tensions between the two countries. This advisory comes just hours after Canada withdrew 41 diplomats and closed most of its embassies and consulates in India, amid a dispute over the killing of a Sikh preacher on Canadian soil.

The travel advisory from Canada emphasises concerns about the threat of terrorist attacks throughout India, prompting a recommendation for its citizens to exercise a high degree of caution while in the country. The advisory also highlights that, in light of recent developments, there have been calls for protests and negative sentiment towards Canada, both in traditional media and on social media platforms.

It warns that demonstrations, including anti-Canada protests, could take place, potentially leading to intimidation or harassment of Canadians. Particularly in Delhi and the National Capital Region, the advisory suggests that Canadians should maintain a low profile with strangers and avoid sharing personal information.

Canada's decision to withdraw 41 diplomats and their families from India was a response to threats of stripping them of their diplomatic immunity made by the Indian government. In addition, Canada has suspended all in-person services at its consulates in Mumbai, Chandigarh, and Bengaluru and has encouraged its citizens in these cities to exercise caution. The High Commission in New Delhi is available to assist all Canadians in India.

The advisory underscores that "petty crime, such as pickpocketing and purse snatching, is common" and that criminals may target foreigners, particularly in major cities and tourist areas. Canadian citizens are urged to be vigilant in crowded locations and advised not to carry large sums of money.

Diplomatic relations between India and Canada have been strained, with tensions escalating since Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau publicly linked Indian intelligence to the killing of Sikh preacher Hardeep Singh Nijjar. India has vehemently rejected these allegations, describing them as "absurd" and "motivated." The diplomatic discord has resulted in the expulsion of senior diplomats and the issuance of travel advisories by both countries.

In response to Canada's actions, last month, India advised its citizens living in Canada and those planning to travel there to exercise "utmost caution," citing concerns about growing anti-India activities and "politically-condoned" hate crimes in the North American country. The ongoing diplomatic dispute between the two nations is of significant international concern.
