Jasmeet Bains takes oath as first Sikh woman assembly member of California
Jasmeet Kaur Bains, a physician from Bakersfield, made history by taking oath as the first Indian-origin Sikh woman assembly member of California.
Earlier, during polls, Bains took an early lead over her opponent Leticia Perez in the Democrat vs. Democrat race for Kern County's 35th Assembly District.
Bains led the race with 10,827 votes, or 58.9 percent, according to the Kern County Election Results website, while Perez trailed significantly with 7,555 votes or 41.1 percent.
Bains is the medical director of Bakersfield Recovery Services, a non-profit that provides addiction treatment to adults.
In her campaign pitch, she stated that healthcare, homelessness, water infrastructure, and air quality would be prioritised.
