Separatists try to set Indian Consulate afire in San Francisco, US condemns

Indian consulate attacked: Indian consulate in San Francisco was set on fire by anti-India elements early Sunday morning. This is the second such attack on the consulate in five months. The first attack took place in March.

According to reports, some anti-India elements attempted to set fire to the Indian Consulate in San Francisco at 1:40 a.m. on Sunday.


The fire was quickly suppressed by the San Francisco Fire Department. A video of the incident has also been verified by sources.

No major damages were reported and no staffers were harmed, an official informed.

The Local San Francisco police department, special diplomatic security personnel, and state and federal authorities have begun an investigation into the incident. Following the incident, there were multiple rounds of discussions with police and administration authorities, which spurred harsh and immediate st action against those responsible.

US condemns incident


The United States has strongly denounced the alleged vandalism and attempted arson against the Indian Consulate in San Francisco on Sunday (local time)."The US strongly condemns the reported vandalism and attempted arson against the Indian Consulate in San Francisco on Saturday. Vandalism or violence against diplomatic facilities or foreign diplomats in the US is a criminal offence," US state department spokesperson Matthew Miller said.

Indian diplomats targeted in poster

Taranjit Singh Sandhu, Indian Ambassador to the United States, and Dr TV Nagendra Prasad, Consul General of India in San Francisco, have been targeted in a poster allegedly circulated by separatists  who accuse them of playing a role in the June killing of designated terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Canada.

India urges strong action by partner countries

Meanwhile, External Affairs Minister (EAM) S Jaishankar stated on Monday that India has demanded that partner countries such as Canada, the United Kingdom, and Australia not give space to separatists to spread their radical extremist ideologies.

"We have requested our partner countries, like Canada, UK, Australia, US that they should not give space to these Khalistanis. These radical extremist ideologies aren't good for us, them, or our ties. Will raise the issue of these posters," Jaishankar said on the matter of names of Indian diplomats in Khalistani posters in Canada.
