PTC Web Desk:  At least 31 persons lost their lives and 169 were injured after a powerful explosion struck an imambargah in Islamabad’s Tarlai area during Friday prayers, police officials said.

The blast triggered panic in the area as police, Rescue 1122 teams and other emergency responders rushed to the spot and began rescue and evacuation operations. The injured were shifted to major hospitals in the federal capital, including the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) and Polyclinic Hospital.

Islamabad Capital Territory Police spokesperson Taqi Jawad said it was premature to determine the exact nature of the explosion. He added that forensic teams would examine the site to establish whether the blast was caused by a suicide attacker or a planted explosive device.

Following the incident, an emergency was declared at Polyclinic, PIMS and CDA Hospital to ensure immediate medical care for the victims. A PIMS spokesperson confirmed that the emergency was imposed on the directions of the hospital’s executive director.

“The main emergency unit, orthopaedics department, burn centre and neurology ward have all been activated,” the spokesperson said, adding that doctors and paramedical staff had been placed on high alert.

The attack has once again raised concerns over security in the federal capital. The latest incident comes less than three months after a suicide bombing outside the district and sessions court building in Islamabad’s G-11 sector on November 11, 2025, which had claimed 12 lives and left over 30 people injured.

Security agencies have cordoned off the blast site, and investigations are underway to identify those responsible and determine the circumstances leading to the explosion.
