US : 2 kids among 8 injured as man opens fire at children's water park in Michigan
US : In a horrific and tragic incident, two children among 8 people injured after a gunman opened fire at a children's water park in US' Michigan on Saturday evening.
The incident unfolded at a splash pad in a Detroit suburb where families had gathered to escape the summer heat on Saturday.
Taking to X handle, the police department said, “We had an active shooter at the splash pad on Auburn in Rochester Hills. That is still an active crime scene and we potentially have the suspect contained nearby, but we asked for the moment people stay away from the area. We have numerous wounded victims. More to follow.”
The shooting occurred shortly after 5 p.m. at a city park with a recreation area featuring a non-slip surface where visitors can activate sprays and fountains of water for play.
As per the sheriff, the suspect reloaded his gun several times, firing up to 28 rounds.
Authorities recovered a handgun and three empty magazines at the scene.
Police cordoned off the area with tape, and dozens of yellow evidence markers were scattered on the ground among colourful folding chairs.
While the motive behind the shooting remains unknown, police believe the attack was random.
In 2024, the United States has experienced over 215 mass shootings to date.
