US university Indian-origin student found dead from self-inflicted gunshot: Report

PTC News Desk: Indian-origin student, Sameer Kamath, found dead at Purdue University, died from self-inflicted gunshot wound, authorities report

Sameer Kamath, a 23-year-old doctoral student of Indian origin at Purdue University, was discovered deceased in a wooded area at Crow’s Grove Nature Preserve on Monday evening. According to Warren County Coroner Justin Brummett, Kamath's death was determined to be a result of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.

Kamath, a US citizen, had completed his master's degree in mechanical engineering at Purdue in August 2023 and was continuing his studies in the same department. A forensic autopsy conducted on February 6 in Crawfordsville, Indiana, revealed the preliminary cause of death as a "gunshot wound of the head" with the manner of death being ruled as "suicide," as stated in a press release by Brummett.

The coroner's office emphasised that the investigation involved multiple local and federal agencies, and a toxicology report is pending. Kamath's family has been notified of the preliminary results. The Warren County Coroner's Office, along with the Warren County Sheriff's Office, Purdue University Administration, and other supporting agencies, continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding Kamath's death.

Wave of violence against Indian students in the US raises alarms

Sameer Kamath's recent death is the latest in a series of disturbing incidents involving students of Indian origin and from India studying in the United States. Just last week, B. Shreyas Reddy, another Indian-origin student, was discovered deceased in Ohio. The Indian mission in New York confirmed Reddy's passing, indicating no initial suspicions of foul play.

In a separate incident, Syed Mazahir Ali, a student from Hyderabad pursuing a Master's in Information Technology, was pursued and brutally assaulted by three unidentified individuals in Chicago. Similarly, Neel Acharya, a 19-year-old Purdue student who had been reported missing, was tragically found dead on the Purdue University West Lafayette campus last month.

Furthermore, earlier this year, Vivek Saini, a 25-year-old Indian student studying for his master's degree in Georgia, was fatally attacked by a homeless individual while at work. The brutal assault, captured on video, involved the assailant striking Saini with a hammer approximately 50 times.
