PTC Web Desk: Indian-origin Captain Pratima Bhullar Maldonado, who has become the highest-ranking South Asian woman in the New York Police (NYD) Department, has made India, especially Punjab,  proud today.

Captain Pratima Bhullar Maldonado runs the 102nd Police Precinct in South Richmond Hill, Queens.

Pratima Bhullar was born in Punjab and moved to Queens in New York when she was 9. Today, she is mother of four children.

Reacting to her achievement, Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri wrote: “Punjab born police officer Captain Pratima Bhullar Maldonado becomes highest-ranking South Asian woman in New York! While we laud achievements of Punjabis worldwide; we are working to ensure that such brilliant minds do not have to head to foreign shores to realise their dreams.”

Pratima Bhullar owes success to dad's hard work
Pratima Bhullar Maldonado's father was a taxi driver. He drove taxi for many years. She was reported as saying that, "My dad actually drove a taxi for many years. He supported us. He was a hard worker. He passed away in 2006, before I became a cop. He would have been so proud right now.”

Pratima Bhullar was promoted to this position in April. However, she says climbing the ranks was never easier for her..

She says people often curse you and not appreciate for what you’re doing. However, you have no other option but to continue with your work.
