Zimbabwe gold mine collapse kills 10, several injured; search operation underway

Zimbabwe gold mine collapse: After the horrific, unfortunate and tragic incident of church’s roof collapsed during Mass in Mexico’s Ciudad Madero which claimed lives of more than 10 people, now tensions, chaos and scare gripped Zimbabwe's Chegutu district. 

In a fatal, horrific and dreadful mishap, at least 10 killed, several injured after a gold mine collapsed in Zimbabwe's Chegutu district.

The tragic mishap unfolded three days ago and search for survivors is still underway after the disused mine collapsed. During the dreadful collapse, the miners were working 150 meters deep, “using undesignated entry points. 

As per the reports, around 42 artisanal miners were said to be working underground at the Bay Horse Mine in Chegutu on Friday when gold mine collapsed on them, out of which 21 have been rescued but 10 others are believed to be trapped under the wreckage. Ten deaths have been confirmed so far, the reports further said. Some of the deceased were found pinned beneath rocks. 

Expressing grief over the death of 10 artisanal miners, Zimbabwe's Vice President Constantino Chiwenga has said that the government will cover the deceased's funeral expenses, and that the toll may rise further.

Chombo requested assistance from the province's mining businesses for rescue efforts.

Notably, the gold mine is located in Zimbabwe’s Mashonaland West province, sits 62 miles west of the Zimbabwean capital, Harare.

In Zimbabwe, which has abundant resources of gold and diamonds, artisanal mining is prevalent. The country in southern Africa also has a lot of accidents during illicit mining operations.
