Delhi-NCR air quality worsens sharply, GRAP III restrictions enforced with immediate effect
Delhi’s AQI, which stood at 343 on Thursday, climbed further to 354 by Friday evening, placing city firmly in ‘Very Poor’ category
PTC Web Desk: Air quality in Delhi and the surrounding National Capital Region (NCR) has deteriorated rapidly, prompting the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) to impose Stage III of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP-III) with immediate effect on Friday.
According to official data, Delhi’s Air Quality Index (AQI), which stood at 343 on Thursday, climbed further to 354 by Friday evening, placing the city firmly in the ‘Very Poor’ category. Weather experts have warned that the situation could worsen further in the coming days due to low wind speed and unfavourable meteorological conditions, potentially pushing AQI levels beyond 400 into the ‘Severe’ category.
In view of the looming health risk, authorities decided to reintroduce stricter pollution-control measures across the NCR. Under GRAP-III, all non-essential construction and demolition activities have been completely halted. In addition, stringent action will be taken against polluting industries and stone-crushing units operating in the region.
Notably, these restrictions had been lifted on January 2 following a temporary improvement in air quality. However, the return of adverse conditions has forced the administration to reinstate the measures to curb further pollution.
Experts attribute the sharp decline in air quality to vehicular emissions, stubble burning, and dense winter smog, which together have pushed pollution levels to hazardous limits. The deteriorating air has caused breathing difficulties and discomfort among residents, particularly children, the elderly, and those with respiratory ailments.
Authorities have urged citizens to limit outdoor activities and follow advisories until air quality shows signs of improvement.
