PTC Web Desk:  The Khanna police have cracked the blind murder case of 81-year-old NRI woman Jagpal Kaur with the arrest of her tenant, who allegedly killed her to repay a debt of Rs 20,000 taken for his father’s medical treatment.

The accused, identified as Rahul, a resident of Aligarh in Uttar Pradesh, was living as a tenant with his wife and two children in Jagpal Kaur’s house located in Nawi Abadi area of Khanna.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Khanna Darpan Ahluwalia said the police received information through the 112 control room helpline on February 1, 2026, regarding the murder of an elderly woman. Police teams immediately reached the spot and launched an investigation with the assistance of forensic experts and technical surveillance units.

Given the lack of initial leads, two special teams were constituted under the supervision of SP (Detective) Pawanjit to trace the unknown assailant. During the probe, suspicion arose against the tenant, following which he was detained for questioning.

The SSP said Rahul was formally detained on February 6, during which he allegedly confessed to the crime. As per the police, the accused was under financial stress and needed to repay Rs 20,000 borrowed from a person in Aligarh. He was aware that the victim had income from multiple rental properties.

According to the investigation, Rahul allegedly scaled the boundary wall of the house on the intervening night of January 31 and February 1 and hid inside the premises. When Jagpal Kaur stepped out of her room, he attacked her from behind and strangled her using a dupatta. He later tied her hands and legs, locked her body inside the bathroom, and fled after taking cash from her purse kept in a cupboard.

The police said the accused had entered the house barefoot and without his mobile phone in an attempt to avoid leaving behind evidence. The dupatta used in the murder has been recovered.

Further investigation in the case is ongoing.
