Monsoon update: The southwest monsoon is expected to become fully active across the remaining parts of Punjab and Haryana over the next two to three days, bringing widespread rainfall to both states. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), several districts are likely to receive heavy rain until July 12, after which rainfall activity is expected to gradually decrease.

Although the monsoon covered most parts of Punjab and Haryana on July 3, a few areas in Punjab's Fazilka and Sri Muktsar Sahib districts, along with parts of Sirsa and Fatehabad in Haryana, had not yet come under its full influence. During the last 24 hours, the monsoon advanced further over northern Gujarat and southern Rajasthan, extending its reach into more areas. As of July 7, the northern limit of the monsoon had reached Barmer, Jodhpur, Rajgarh and Bathinda.

In its latest weather bulletin issued on July 7, the IMD said that light to moderate rainfall is expected at many places between July 9 and July 12, while some locations could witness heavy showers. A yellow alert has been issued for districts that may experience intense rainfall during this period.

The forecast suggests that heavy rain is likely in parts of eastern Punjab, including Pathankot, Hoshiarpur, Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar (Nawanshahr), Rupnagar and Mohali. In Haryana, districts such as Panchkula, Ambala, Yamunanagar, Mahendragarh, Rewari, Gurugram, Faridabad, Nuh and Palwal may also receive heavy rainfall over the coming days.

During the past 24 hours, several areas in Punjab and isolated parts of Haryana recorded light to moderate rain accompanied by thunderstorms and strong winds. These weather conditions kept daytime temperatures below normal, while night temperatures remained close to seasonal averages.

Bathinda recorded Punjab's highest maximum temperature at 39.1 degrees Celsius, while Adampur reported the state's lowest minimum temperature at 26.8 degrees Celsius. In Haryana, Sirsa registered the highest daytime temperature at 38.2 degrees Celsius, while Gurugram recorded the lowest minimum temperature at 25 degrees Celsius.

Rainfall data from July 1 to the morning of July 7 shows that Punjab received 32.4 mm of rain against its long-period average of 27.5 mm, recording an excess of 18 percent. Haryana, however, received 17.4 mm against the normal 24 mm, reflecting a rainfall deficit of 27 percent.

The IMD has also forecast widespread rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds of up to 60 kmph across Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand until July 13. Authorities have advised residents to stay updated with weather advisories and take necessary precautions during periods of heavy rainfall.
