One injured in police encounter in Bathinda, five alleged drug peddlers arrested

A drug suspect was shot in the leg during a Bathinda police raid after allegedly opening fire; four accomplices arrested

PTC Web Desk: A suspected drug peddler was injured during a police encounter in Bathinda late at night, while four of his aides were arrested from the spot, police officials said.

According to SP City Narendra Singh, the Kotwali police station had received specific information that some unidentified individuals were consuming and supplying narcotics from a building in the city. The suspects were also allegedly involved in targeting passersby near the railway station at night to fund their drug addiction.

Acting on the tip-off, Inspector Parvinder Singh led a police team to conduct a raid at the identified location. During the operation, one of the accused, identified as Neeraj, alias Kala, a resident of Parshuram Nagar, allegedly opened fire at the police party using a country-made pistol.

Police officials said the team initially fired warning shots in response. However, when the accused allegedly fired again, the police retaliated and a bullet struck him in the left leg. He fell to the ground and was immediately overpowered.

The four other suspects present at the scene attempted to flee but were chased and apprehended by the police team. In total, five persons were taken into custody.

The injured accused was shifted to the Civil Hospital in Bathinda. Officials stated that all detained individuals have criminal backgrounds, with multiple cases already registered against them.

The police have registered a fresh case in connection with the incident and initiated further investigation.
