Act would severely hit BPL families: Rural Development Minister

Rural Development and Panchayat Minister Tarunpreet Singh Sond, while tabling the resolution opposing the VB-G RAM G Act in the Assembly, said the legislation would seriously harm below-poverty-line households, Scheduled Caste communities and rural workers who rely on MGNREGA for their livelihood. The resolution urged the state government to raise the issue with the Centre and seek the continuation of MGNREGA as a demand-driven, rights-based scheme that is fully funded by the central government. It also called on the Centre to review those provisions of the VB-G RAM G Act that place an excessive financial burden on states and weaken rural labourers’ right to employment.

Sunil Jakhar slams AAP govt over special Assembly Session

PTC News Desk: A special session of the Punjab Vidhan Sabha has been convened today to deliberate on the impact of recent changes to the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA), 2005.

During the session, the government will table a resolution urging the state to take up the issue with the Centre, seeking the continuation of MGNREGA as a demand-driven, rights-based scheme that is fully funded by the central government.

The resolution also calls for a review of provisions under the Viksit Bharat—Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission (Gramin) (VB G RAM G) Act, which the state alleges places an excessive financial burden on states and weakens the employment rights of rural workers.

In addition, the state government plans to introduce three bills in the Assembly: the Punjab Abadi Deh (Record of Rights) Amendment Bill, the Indian Stamp (Punjab Second Amendment) Bill, and the Punjab Land Revenue (Amendment) Bill, 2025.

The session is expected to witness intense debates, with legislators from the AAP, Congress and Shiromani Akali Dal targeting the BJP over the amended VB G RAM G Act. Meanwhile, the BJP is likely to press for a discussion on the state’s law and order situation.
