PTC Web Desk: The divorce proceedings involving Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief C. Joseph Vijay and his wife, Sangeetha Sornalingam, came to an end on Friday after she formally withdrew her petition before the Chengalpattu Family Court.

Sangeetha appeared before the court through video conferencing and informed the judge about her decision to withdraw the case. Following her submission, the court closed the proceedings.

Petition filed earlier this year

Sangeetha had approached the Chengalpattu Family Court in February 2025, seeking dissolution of her marriage with Vijay. In her plea, she had cited irreconcilable differences between the couple as the reason for seeking divorce.

Along with the divorce request, she had also sought permanent alimony and permission to continue living in the couple's matrimonial home in Chennai's Neelankarai.

The matter had been adjourned several times over the past few months. During a hearing on June 15, Sangeetha had indicated through video conferencing that she intended to withdraw the petition. The court had then listed the matter for August 7.

In another hearing held last month, the proceedings were deferred after neither Vijay nor Sangeetha appeared before the court. On several previous occasions as well, both remained absent, while their lawyers represented them and informed the court about difficulties in attending the hearings personally.

With Friday's order, the family court formally brought the case to a close.

Married for nearly three decades

Vijay and Sangeetha have been married for almost 26 years. The couple tied the knot on August 25, 1999, in a traditional Hindu ceremony in Chennai despite belonging to different faiths. Their son was born in August 2000, while their daughter was born in 2005.

Speculation over marriage had grown in recent years

Rumours about problems in the couple's marriage first gained attention in 2023 after Sangeetha was absent from several public appearances involving Vijay. Although those reports were dismissed at the time, speculation resurfaced in 2025 when she skipped key political programmes of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, including the party's second state conference.

However, with the withdrawal of the divorce petition, the legal proceedings between the couple have now officially concluded.
