PTC News Desk: In response to recent mayoral poll controversies, Chandigarh has appointed Madhup Tiwari, a 1995 batch IPS officer, as the new Director General of Police, replacing Praveer Ranjan.

Madhup Tiwari, currently serving as the special commissioner of police (law and order) in the Delhi Police, will now assume the crucial role in Chandigarh.

The move comes amidst allegations of rigging in the recent mayoral polls in Chandigarh. The BJP emerged victorious in the polls against the Congress-AAP alliance on January 30. However, opposition councillors accused the presiding officer of tampering with the ballot papers, an accusation dismissed by the BJP.

Taking cognizance of the AAP's plea regarding irregularities during the polls, the Supreme Court issued notices to Chandigarh authorities, including the civic body, on Monday. The court condemned the alleged defacement of ballot papers, describing it as a mockery of democracy, and ordered the preservation of ballots and video recordings of the electoral proceedings.
