Union minister Smriti Irani’s convoy was stopped while the Amethi MP was heckled by Congress workers in Varanasi on Saturday. Earlier in the day, Smriti Irani lashed out at Rahul Gandhi’s planned visit to Hathras and called it a “politics on rape”.
While addressing a press conference, Smriti Irani said that action against rapists of Hathras rape victim, a Dalit teenager, will be taken after the Special Investigation Team (SIT) would submit its report.
She said that "People are aware Congress' tactics of that is why they ensured a historic win for BJP in 2019 polls. People understand that their visit to Hathras is for their politics and not for justice to the victim."
Everyone should oppose and protest such heinous crimes, Smriti Irani said, adding that "I have requested the CM (Yogi Adityanath) to take action. Two officials have been suspended and I am sure that action will be taken after the SIT submits its report."
"Modi government has always protected the rights of women and their future and likewise an appropriate action will be taken against the accused by the Yogi Adityanath government,” she said.
Irani also said that women from the Samajwadi Party met her personally to request that the victim’s name not be revealed on social media.
She further took a dig at Rahul Gandhi and said, “In a democratic country, everyone has understood the politics of the Congress party. That's why we were elected in 2014. If anyone wants to play politics on rape, I cannot stop him.”
The statement comes on the day when Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra along with Rahul Gandhi is scheduled to visit the family of the alleged gangrape victim in Hathras (UP).
