CBI files FIR against Sameer Wankhede for alleged extortion of Rs 25 crore from SRK's family

Mumbai, May 15: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has lodged a First Information Report (FIR) against Sameer Wankhede, the former zonal director of the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), alleging that Shah Rukh Khan's family was threatened with implicating his son Aryan in a narcotics case unless they paid a sum of Rs 25 crore.

Wankhede gained prominence after the arrest of Aryan Khan and others during an alleged drug bust on a Mumbai cruise ship in October 2021. The FIR against him details corruption allegations and criminal misconduct.

The CBI's FIR raises concerns over Wankhede's foreign trips and the purchase and sale of expensive wristwatches. Investigations into these allegations, along with those against Ashish Ranjan, a former intelligence officer with the NCB, revealed that their acquired assets were not adequately justified by their declared income.

The FIR notes that Wankhede failed to provide a proper explanation for his foreign travels and allegedly misrepresented the expenditure incurred during these trips.

Apart from Wankhede, the FIR names four other accused individuals, including Vishwa Vijay Singh and Ashish Ranjan, who were senior officers with the NCB, as well as KP Gosavi and his associate Sanvile D'Souza. KP Gosavi, a witness in the drugs-on-cruise case, raised questions regarding his access to the accused, particularly his selfie with Aryan Khan.

The FIR points out that Gosavi was present with the accused individuals and was allowed to visit the NCB office after the raid, which is not in line with the norms for an independent witness. It states that Gosavi took advantage of the situation, capturing selfies and recording voice notes of the accused.

According to the FIR, there was a conspiracy to extort Rs 25 crore from the family members of Aryan Khan by threatening them with allegations of narcotics possession. The amount was eventually settled at Rs 18 crore, and a token bribe of Rs 50 lakh was allegedly taken by KP Gosavi and Sanvile D'Souza. However, a portion of the bribe money was later returned.

The CBI alleges that Wankhede instructed Vishwa Vijay Singh to allow KP Gosavi to handle the accused and create a visual impression of Gosavi having custody of Aryan Khan while escorting him to the NCB Mumbai office.

Several of these allegations were previously made by Nawab Malik, a former Maharashtra minister and NCP leader who is currently in jail on corruption charges, as well as Prabhakar Sail, a witness in the drugs-on-cruise case who passed away due to a heart attack last year.

Wankhede was transferred to the Directorate General of Taxpayer Services in Chennai last year. In response to the recent CBI raids on his residence, he claimed that he was being punished for being a patriot.

Aryan Khan spent 22 days in jail following his arrest before being cleared of charges by the NCB due to a lack of sufficient evidence. Amid the controversy surrounding the case, a separate investigation was initiated into the allegations against Wankhede and his team.
