PTC Web Desk: Shah Rukh Khan's 'Dunki' draws inspiration from Punjab's Jalandhar's distinctive tradition of symbolic aeroplane structures atop houses, reflecting aspirations for foreign shores.

The city of Jalandhar in Punjab takes centre stage as a muse for the intriguing narrative of 'Dunki'. The movie, directed by Rajkumar Hirani, finds its roots in the remarkable custom prevalent in Jalandhar, where houses sport cement aeroplanes on their rooftops to commemorate a family member's relocation abroad.

Director Rajkumar Hirani revealed how these unique architectural additions served as a catalyst for the film's storyline. He shared insights into the practice, noting that these structures, often housing water tanks or even bedrooms, captivated his imagination and inspired the narrative journey of 'Dunki'.

Shah Rukh Khan also presented images of a renowned gurdwara often referred to as 'visa gurdwara'. Rajkumar Hirani revealed the backstory, stating that individuals visit this place to offer their passports. Adjacent to these gurdwaras, one can find vendors selling toy airplanes. Taapsee Pannu's character, Mannu, in the movie is inspired by a genuine visa engineer.
