Edinson Cavani stole the thunder as he scored a pair of goals to help Uruguay beat Portugal 2-1 to enter quarter finals of the FIFA World Cup 2018 on Saturday. Uruguay, continuing its winning spree, took full measure of C Ronaldo and his team by scoring once in each half. Interestingly, in the first match of the round of 16, a European team - France - beat its South American opponent - Argentina, it turned other way in the second match of the knock out round. South American Uruguay beat its European opponent Portugal to restore the balance. Ronaldo, too, failed to add to his tally of four goals of the group matches. Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani's lethal combination paved way for an early lead for Uruguay. It was in the seventh minute that Cavani and Suarez had an exchange of passes before Cavani hit the target to give South Americans the lead. Trailing 0-1 at the breather, Portugal came back strongly in the second half when Pepe headed in the equaliser. Incidentally, it was the first goal against Uruguay in the World Cup and it came rom a defender. Edinson Cavani, however, put the issue beyond Portugal's grasp with a long shot that left the Portuguese goalkeeper helpless. Uruguay will now play France in the quarter-finals.
