Gobind Sagar tragedy: Punjab CM announces ₹1 lakh relief, but victims' kin want govt job

Una, August 2: Seven youths from Banur in SAS Nagar district of Punjab died after drowning in the Gobind Sagar lake over the Satluj river in Androuli village of Bangana subdivision on Monday.

According to Additional Superintendent of Police Parveen Dhiman, the deceased have been identified as Pawan Kumar (35), son of Surjit, Raman Kumar (19), son of Lal Chand, Labh Singh (17), son of Lal Chand, Lakhbir Singh (16), son of Ramesh Kumar, Arun Kumar (14), son of Ramesh Kumar, Vishal Kumar (18), son of Basu, and Shiva Kumar (16), son of Avtar Kumar. Chief Minister of Punjab, Bhagwant Mann, has offered condolences to the families of the deceased.



Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann announced that the families of the youth who drowned in the Gobind Sagar lake will be provided financial assistance of Rs 1 lakh each. He said that this amount will be released from the Chief Minister's Relief Fund. Sharing the information from his official social media handle, he wrote, "Though, the value of human life cannot be measured in any currency, yet by sharing the suffering with the families of the victims, their suffering will be reduced... By drowning in the Gobind Sagar lake. Financial assistance of Rs 1 lakh will be given to each family of 7 youths of dead Banur from the Chief Minister's Relief Fund.



After Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann's announcement of financial assistance of Rs 1 lakh each, the victim's family refused to accept the money while thanking CM Bhagwant Mann. They say that instead of money, the government should give a government job to one member of all the families so that their future can be secured.  "On the way to Baba Balak Nath, we got the sad news of the drowning of 7 youths from Banur from Punjab who stopped to bathe in the Gobind Sagar Lake... I express my heartfelt sympathy to the families... Prayers to God... May the departed souls rest in peace. Condolences to the families. Giving strength to believe...," said Bhagwant Mann in a tweet. Speaker of Punjab Legislative Assembly, Kultar Singh Sandhawan also consoled the families, saying in a tweet, "The death of 7 youths from Punjab in the Gobind Sagar Lake of Una district of Himachal has deeply shocked the mind. I share the grief with the families of the deceased youths and hope that such unfortunate incidents will not happen in the future don't happen." Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur took Twitter to share the grief. "The news that seven people died due to drowning in Gobind Sagar lake in Andoroli of Una district is extremely sad. May God place the departed souls at his feet and give strength to the bereaved family members. Peace!," Thakur said. The Governor of the state, Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar has expressed deep grief over the incident of the drowning of seven people in Gobind Sagar Lake at Andoroli in Una district. He has expressed peace to the departed souls and condolences to the bereaved families.
