Kerala makes wearing face mask mandatory; any violations will be punishable
Thiruvananthapuram (Kerala), April 27: As the number of Covid-19 cases continues to increase in the state, the Kerala government mandated the wearing of masks on Wednesday and said that any violations will be punishable.
"...In exercise of the powers conferred under section 20 (3) of the Disaster Management Act 2005, hereby orders that wearing of masks in all public places, gatherings, workplaces and during transport will be compulsory in the state. Violation of above instructions shall be punishable under the provisions of DM Act and other relevant laws in force," Dr V P Joy (Chief Secretary) said as per the order of the state governor.
The move came to light ahead of the continuously surging cases of Covid-19 across the country.
India recorded 2,927 new infections in the last 24 hours, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare informed on Wednesday.

On Tuesday, India had recorded 2,483 new Covid-19 cases. The active caseload in the country also increased from 15,636 to 16,279. The active Covid-19 cases now account for 0.04 percent of the total cases, according to an update by the health ministry.
A total of 2,252 Coronavirus patients recovered from the infection in the last 24 hours, taking the total number of recoveries since the beginning of the pandemic to 4,25,25,563. The recovery rate now stands at 98.75 percent.
According to the update by the health ministry, 32 patients succumbed to the infection in the last 24 hours. The death toll due to the Covid-19 is now at 5,23,654.
The daily case positivity rate also saw an uptick from 0.55 percent (on Tuesday) to 0.58 percent (on Wednesday). The weekly positivity rate has been recorded at 0.59%.
In terms of vaccination, 21,97,082 doses of the Covid-19 vaccine were given out during this time. With this, the total number of vaccines administered as part of the nationwide vaccination campaign has now reached 1,88,19,40,971.
