15 people feared trapped as building collapses in Pune due to heavy rain, rescue operation underway
PTC News Desk: At least 15 people feared trapped after a building collapsed in Maharashtra's Pimpri-Chinchwad area of Pune district on Wednesday.
The building collapse took place during heavy rainfall that has been affecting Pune and nearby areas for the past several days. Fire brigade teams and disaster response personnel rushed to the site and began rescue operations to search for people who may be trapped under the debris.
The exact cause of the collapse is still not known. Authorities are using heavy machinery to remove the rubble while rescue teams continue searching for survivors. Officials have not yet confirmed the number of people killed or injured.
The incident comes as Maharashtra faces an intense monsoon, with heavy rain causing floods, waterlogging and damage to buildings in several districts. Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad have received continuous rainfall over the past week, forcing more than 6,000 people to leave flood-affected areas.
Schools and colleges in parts of Pune have remained closed after the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an Orange Alert for heavy rain. The district has already recorded more than its average monthly rainfall in the first week of July, while several rain-related incidents, including landslides and wall collapses, have claimed lives.
The lastest incident comes days after a three-storey residential building collapsed in Mumbai's Mankhurd area during heavy rain, killing six people, including five children. Meanwhile, Mumbai has also been hit by one of its heaviest monsoon spells in recent years, with record rainfall causing severe waterlogging, transport disruptions and several rain-related deaths.
