Cash-for-query row case: ED files money laundering case against Mahua Moitra
Cash-for-query row case: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has filed a money laundering complaint against Trinamool Congress leader Mahua Moitra in the cash-for-query row case, according to sources.
This is the ED's second case against Moitra. The first is related to discrepancies in a foreign exchange contravention case in which the ED issued three summonses to Moitra, who has yet to appear before the investigators.
The move comes days after the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) filed a First Information Report (FIR) against Moitra, based on the instructions of anti-corruption ombudsman Lokpal.
The Lokpal issued the directives to the CBI after obtaining the results of the agency's preliminary investigation into allegations made by Bharatiya Janata Party Lok Sabha member Nishikant Dubey against Moitra.
The Lokpal had instructed the CBI to submit its findings within six months of probing all elements of the complaints filed against her in the matter.
Moitra was removed from the Lok Sabha in December of last year for "unethical conduct". The former MP has filed a Supreme Court challenge to her expulsion and will run for the TMC's Krishnanagar Lok Sabha seat in West Bengal in the upcoming general elections.
BJP MP Dubey has said that Moitra asked questions in the Lok Sabha in exchange for cash and gifts from Dubai-based businessman Darshan Hiranandani.
Moitra, however, has denied all allegations.
According to the Lokpal, the "allegations levelled against the RPS (Respondent Public Servant), most of which are supported by cogent evidence, are extremely serious in nature, especially in view of the position held by her."
"Therefore, in our considered opinion, a deeper probe is required to establish the truth. This is vital in view of the position and status held by the RPS at the relevant point of time," said the order of the Lokpal bench.
