Weather update: Delhi braces for rain and thunderstorms as IMD issues fresh weather warning
Weather update: After another warm and humid start to the day, residents of the national capital may finally get some relief as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast rain and thunderstorms across several parts of Delhi over the next few hours.
According to the latest district-wise forecast, light rain or drizzle is expected in areas, including New Delhi, Central Delhi, East Delhi, South Delhi, South East Delhi, South West Delhi and West Delhi. The weather activity is likely to be accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds.
The IMD has predicted wind speeds of 40 to 50 kmph, with occasional gusts touching 60 kmph in some locations. Localities such as Dwarka, Palam and the IGI Airport may also receive light rainfall, while winds in these areas could reach speeds of 30 to 50 kmph.
The changing weather is not expected to remain limited to Delhi. Neighbouring regions, including Rewari in Haryana and Khairthal and Kotputli in Rajasthan, are also likely to witness light to moderate showers, thunderstorms and gusty winds during the next couple of hours.
Although rainfall is expected to be light, the IMD has advised people to remain cautious during the storm activity. Farmers have been urged not to leave harvested crops in the open and to avoid spraying fertilizers or pesticides while rain is expected.
Earlier in the day, Delhi recorded a hot morning despite the approaching weather system. The minimum temperature settled at 30.2°C, which was above the seasonal average. Several weather stations, including Palam, Lodhi Road, Ridge and Ayanagar, also reported temperatures higher than normal for this time of the year.
Meanwhile, the city's air quality remained in the 'Moderate' category. Data released by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) showed Delhi's Air Quality Index (AQI) at 150 at 9 a.m., indicating air quality that may affect sensitive groups but remains better than the poor and severe categories.
With rain-bearing clouds moving towards the capital, residents are advised to stay updated with the latest weather advisories and exercise caution while travelling during periods of thunderstorms and strong winds.
