Heatwave 2024 | Scorching heatwave across several parts of India kills 54; check weather update

Heatwave 2024 | A severe heatwave has swept across several regions of India, leaving a trail of devastation and claiming the lives of at least 54 people. 

The blistering temperatures have brought life to a standstill in many areas, exacerbating the already challenging conditions faced by communities.


Heatwave conditions persisted in central, eastern, and northern India, with numerous cities including Delhi, experiencing high temperatures above 50 degrees Celsius. The scorching conditions have led to widespread discomfort and health concerns among residents, particularly the elderly and vulnerable populations. 


 

Meanwhile, a dust storm is expected throughout Uttar Pradesh from May 31 to June 1, as well as in Haryana, Chandigarh, and Delhi on May 31.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) also projected very light/light rainfall, thunderstorms, and lightning over the plains of Northwest India between May 31 and June 2.

Meanwhile, on Wednesday Delhi heatwave claimed the life of a 40-year-old man. The man from Bihar's Darbhanga died at Delhi's Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital

A doctor who checked him stated that he was staying in a room without a cooler or fan and had a high fever. According to the doctor, the body temperature reached 107 degrees Celsius, which is approximately 10 degrees higher than normal. 

Meanwhile, at least 19 people have died as Bihar experiences intense heatwave conditions, with temperatures exceeding 44 degrees Celsius.

In Bihar's Aurangabad, the death toll due to heat wave conditions has reached 12, while four people died in Kaimur district, including a worker on election duty, on Thursday and three people have died in Bihar's Arrah in Bhojpur district after suffering from extreme heatwaves in the region.

Severe heatwave in these states; Check List 

According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), regions including Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, and Odisha were forecasted to experience heatwave to severe heatwave conditions on May 31 and June 1.  

Heatwave conditions were also expected in isolated areas of Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, and Uttarakhand on May 31. Additionally, hot and humid weather was predicted in isolated parts of Konkan, Goa, and Gangetic West Bengal on May 31 and June 1.
