Rain wreaks havoc across India: Bridge snaps, bus trapped, child dies, alerts issued in several states

Weather update: Heavy monsoon rains have thrown life out of gear in several states across the country. From the hills to the plains, reports of damage and danger are pouring in from every direction. Roads remain shut in Uttarakhand, a bridge has collapsed in Chhattisgarh, rivers in Uttar Pradesh are inching close to danger levels  and an accident in Rajasthan has claimed the life of a young child.

Uttarakhand: Yamunotri Highway blocked at multiple points, Rudraprayag on alert

A landslide in Uttarkashi district has blocked the Yamunotri National Highway at several stretches, leaving travellers stranded for hours. In Rudraprayag, continuous rainfall has put the local administration on edge, with the threat of landslides looming over several areas. Officials have urged residents and travellers to stay cautious as the rain shows no signs of easing.

Chhattisgarh: Bridge collapses mid-rain, passenger bus trapped

Chhattisgarh, too, has taken a hit from relentless rainfall. A bridge on the Bilaspur-Ratanpur-Pendra route snapped in two under the pressure of the downpour. At the time of the collapse, a passenger bus was crossing the bridge and got stuck in between. Quick action helped bring the situation under control, but the incident sent a wave of panic through the area. The weather department has issued a warning for two more days of rain along with lightning strikes in the state.


Uttar Pradesh: Ganga among 10 rivers in spate

The impact of heavy rain in the hills is now clearly visible in the plains. In Uttar Pradesh, around 10 rivers, including the Ganga, Ghaghara and Sharda, are flowing above normal levels. The situation is most serious in Bijnor district, where Ganga waters have entered six villages. Boats are now being used to ferry people through flooded village streets, badly disrupting everyday life.

Rajasthan: House roof collapses in Jodhpur, child dies

Rajasthan has also been hit hard by the rains. In Jodhpur's Nagori Silawaton area, the roof of a house caved in. The accident claimed the life of eight-year-old Alsifa, while her father and grandmother suffered serious injuries. Both are currently undergoing treatment at a hospital.

Kolkata under yellow alert, rain likely to continue

Rain has been lashing several parts of Kolkata since Monday, and the trend doesn't appear to be letting up anytime soon. The weather department has issued a yellow alert for the city until August 6, adding that thunderstorms accompanied by rain are likely to continue through tomorrow.
