ITBP DIG Parminder Singh, driver killed after SUV hits divider, rams into car in UP
PTC News Desk: Indo-Tibetan Border Police DIG Parminder Singh and his driver Ravi Shankar were killed while another soldier was injured after SUV they were travelling in crossed the central divider and collided head-on with an oncoming car on the Dehradun-Panchkula National Highway in Uttar Pradesh's Saharanpur on Saturday morning, police said.
Parminder Singh, who had recently completed a training programme in Mussoorie, was travelling to Ambala at the time of the accident.
The impact of the collision was so severe that it left both the vehicles badly damaged, trapping the occupants inside. The accident occurred near the Jhabiran cut under the Sarsawa police station limits at around 9.30 am.
According to police, the Scorpio carrying ITBP Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Parminder Singh lost control, hit the road divider and crossed into the opposite lane. It then crashed head-on into a Swift Dzire travelling towards Haridwar.
Police and locals launch rescue operation
Police and local residents immediately started a rescue operation and pulled the injured people from the damaged vehicles. They were then taken to a nearby hospital.
Emergency Medical Officer Dr Nitin Jain said that DIG Parminder Singh and his driver, Ravi Shankar, were declared dead on arrival at the hospital.
The DIG's gunner, Jairam, suffered an injury to his hand and is undergoing treatment.
Saharanpur Superintendent of Police Shailendra Srivastava said the initial investigation suggests that the Scorpio lost control before crossing the divider and entering the opposite lane, where it collided with the car carrying a family towards Haridwar.
One person travelling in the Swift Dzire was critically injured. Police have sent the bodies of Parminder Singh and Ravi Shankar for post-mortem examination.
The exact cause of the accident is still being investigated, and police have collected evidence from the accident site.
