PTC News Desk: Sources within the Election Commission suggest that the announcement of Lok Sabha election dates is likely to occur after March 13, following the completion of state visits by officials.

The Election Commission is currently in the process of assessing the preparedness for the general elections through visits to multiple states. Once these visits conclude, the commission is expected to unveil the election schedule, as indicated by sources within the commission on Friday. Presently, officials from the central poll body are engaged in evaluating the situation in Tamil Nadu, with subsequent visits planned for Uttar Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir. It is anticipated that these state visits will be wrapped up before March 13.

In recent months, the commission has been conducting regular meetings with the Chief Electoral Officers (CEOs) of all states to evaluate their readiness. During these discussions, CEOs have highlighted various areas of concern, including the movement and security of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) and the requirement for heightened vigilance along borders.

In an interesting development, the Election Commission is exploring the utilisation of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to facilitate the smooth conduct of the polls this year, as per officials familiar with the matter.

Utilising Artificial Intelligence for Lok Sabha elections

In preparation for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls scheduled before May, the Election Commission has made a strategic decision to leverage Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology. A specialised division dedicated to AI has been established within the ECI, tasked with identifying and mitigating false information circulated on social media and digital platforms.

Ensuring the integrity of the electoral process, the swift removal of false or inflammatory content on social media during elections is a priority. In case of repeated violations by any party or candidate, stringent actions such as suspension or blocking of accounts may be taken, as per official sources.

In addition to content moderation, the commission is committed to fact-checking, combating misinformation, and enhancing security measures in sensitive regions to uphold the integrity of the electoral process.

The Election Commission's data reveals that a staggering 96.88 crore individuals are eligible to vote in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, marking it as the world's largest electorate. Furthermore, approximately 1.85 crore individuals in the age group of 18-19 have been registered to exercise their voting rights, according to the electoral body.
