LS Speaker Om Birla urges voters to take into account behaviour & conduct of their representatives in House
The ninth Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) India Region Conference was inaugurated in Udaipur on Monday by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla.
Addressing the Conference's Presiding Officers and legislators, Birla stated that legislatures, whether the Parliament or the State Legislative Assemblies and Councils, represent the hopes, dreams and aspirations of 140 crore Indians.
"It is the responsibility of public representatives to uphold the faith of the people in the Legislature," he added.
He stated that it is the responsibility of public representatives to ensure that legislatures work for the socioeconomic well-being of the people.
"Legislators should strive to strengthen democracy and enrich parliamentary traditions," he stated.
Observing that people expect legislators to hold meaningful discussions in legislatures to solve their problems by guiding the Executive in formulating public welfare policies, Birla stated, "This can happen only when the public representatives behave and act as per the highest standards of discipline and decorum in the House and in public life."
Observing that when well-thought-out decisions for the advancement of the nation are made in a well-thought manner, the public's faith in parliamentary democracy is strengthened.
Birla observed that disruption inside legislatures impedes the functioning of parliamentary democracy, slowing the rate of national progress.
"The tendency of planned disruptions and disturbances lower the dignity of the House and there is a need to curb such a tendency."
