Amritsar honour killing update: In a horrifying case of honour killing, a couple who had solemnised their marriage at a gurdwara sahib in Punjab’s Amritsar district were allegedly murdered by the girl’s father. The incident, which took place in Boparai village near Ajnala, has sent shockwaves across the region.

The deceased have been identified as Jobandeep Singh (24), a labourer from Kakhar village, and Sukhpreet Kaur, the daughter of the accused, Gurdayal Singh. Sources said the couple had been in a relationship for the past three years, but their families, particularly the girl’s side, opposed the match due to caste differences.

Despite the opposition, the couple eloped on June 2 and solemnised their marriage at a local gurdwara sahib through the traditional Anand Karaj ceremony. Exclusive images of the wedding ceremony have now surfaced, confirming that the two had already taken marital vows. The couple had also planned to legalise their union through a court marriage.

According to reports, on June 3, the newlyweds returned to Sukhpreet’s parental home to collect her belongings. Gurdayal Singh, who was present at the house, confronted his daughter, leading to a heated argument. It is alleged that during the confrontation, Sukhpreet attempted to defend herself physically, which further enraged her father.

In a fit of rage, Gurdayal Singh reportedly inflicted electric shocks on the couple before attacking them with a sharp-edged weapon, killing them on the spot. After committing the brutal act, the accused walked into Ram Tirath police station, his hands reportedly soaked in blood, and surrendered himself.

Senior police officials, including SHO Inderjit Singh, confirmed the details of the double murder and stated that Gurdayal Singh has been taken into custody. “We have registered a case under relevant sections and the bodies have been sent for post-mortem,” the SHO said.

In statements made to the media, Sukhpreet’s family, including her mother and the village sarpanch, admitted that they had opposed the relationship due to caste issues. They claimed that despite several warnings, Sukhpreet continued her relationship with Jobandeep, who frequently visited their home under the guise of doing labour work.

The police are now further investigating the circumstances surrounding the killings, including whether any other family members were involved in the crime.
